The Frame

Cottage Windows

Cottage windows take the traditional casement and divide it into smaller panes with glazing bars — the unmistakable hallmark of country cottages, period farmhouses and chocolate-box British villages. The smaller pane proportions add depth, character and period authenticity to any traditional or rural property.

Cottage Windows — common questions

Both use glazing bars to divide the window into smaller panes, but cottage windows typically use a more irregular, organic grid (often 2×2 or 2×3 panes per sash), while Georgian windows use a strict, symmetrical 6-over-6 or 8-over-8 sash grid based on classical proportions.
Often, yes — particularly timber cottage windows with through-pane glazing bars and authentic mouldings. We'll check the planning specifics for your property and supply a specification that satisfies heritage requirements.
Through bars (genuine separate panes joined by structural bars) give the most authentic look and are best for conservation areas. Applied bars (slimline strips bonded to a single pane) are easier to clean and slightly more energy-efficient. Both look great — we'll show samples at survey.
Slightly — glazing bars do reduce the open glass area marginally, but the loss is minimal and well worth it for the period character. Most cottage rooms benefit from the visual rhythm the bars create.
Yes — leaded patterns can be incorporated into cottage windows for an even more traditional look, particularly suited to Tudor, Arts and Crafts and chocolate-box cottage properties.
Just as efficient as standard casements — modern double or triple glazing and weather-tight seals come as standard. The glazing bars don't materially affect thermal performance.
